The footpath between the rock art areas is closed from 9 September

We are renovating the footpath. Therefore, the footpath that connects the west side with the east side is closed from week 37. This means that there are two routes you can choose to go, one on the west side and one on the east side of the museum. If you want to go both routes, you have to go back to the museum and then follow the other route from there.

Rock art routes

You may choose two different routes.

The white route is approximately 1.2 km long from the museum and back to the museum. It is a 500-meter walk to the first panel along this route. You will see some of the oldest rock carvings Alta has to offer, approx. 7000-5000 years old. Many of the carvings along this route were painted in the 1970s. If you only have an hour at your disposal, this route is a good option.

The red route is approximately 1.9 km long from the museum and back to the museum. It is a 650-meter walk to the first panel along this route. You will see some of the oldest rock carvings we have in Alta, approx. 7000-5000 years old, and also younger carvings approx. 4000-2000 years old. Along this route, all the carvings are unpainted
