Exhibition about Sami heritage
The exhibition depicts life in the Sea Sámi parts of Vest-Finnmark through pictures and objects from the Alta Museum collection and private households.
It invites us to witness how the Sámi community has changed through time: from vibrant living Sámi communities, through periods when the Sámi felt they had to hide their identity and lost their visible characteristics, to the present day when the Sámi are once again able to be open about their family history and identity.
As part of the ongoing retrieval of Sea Sámi identity, the traditional Sámi costumes, the kofte or gákti, are brought out of the closets to take their rightful place in our society. The exhibition celebrates the great diversity of gákti designs that are once again flourishing all around.
